Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has suggested that Enzo Fernandez could consider leaving Chelsea if things don’t pick up under new boss Mauricio Pochettino.
The midfielder was signed late in January for a huge £106.7million to try and bolster their central ranks, while also looking towards the future. The 22-year-old was just off the back of an exceptional World Cup with Argentina, where he helped guide his nation to a historic win.
While all the headlines centred around teammate Lionel Messi, Fernandez announced himself on the biggest stage and won the Young Player of the Tournament award. After just six months at Benfica, he earned his big move to Chelsea, where has continued to impress.
The youngster played the second half of last season as a deeper midfielder and despite his ability, the side were unable to pick up their own form. This summer has seen the central ranks added to again with Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia joining for their own huge fees.
It has allowed Fernandez to push higher up the pitch, where he has shown plenty of ability to create for his teammates, though chances haven’t necessarily been taken. After four games, the Blues have just four points to show for their work under new boss Pochettino.
Merson has warned Chelsea that Fernandez could soon look to depart the club, should he not get the support from around him. As part of a column for Sky Sports, the former Arsenal man said: “Chelsea have brought in a million players and you think: ‘How do you get a team out of this lot…?’
“They’ve bought too many players that are the same. Enzo Fernandez is different class – a cut above the rest. But how long will he stand for this? There’s not enough guile in the team. You haven’t got players that will put the ball through the eye of a needle.”
It suggests that while others are still taking time to settle in and adjust, Fernandez is already at the level to which he can impress at the top. It remains to be seen how the project will progress from this point on, with plenty of hits and misses expected from their transfer policy.
