In the run-up to the elections, three prominent figures from the PDP – Obi, Atiku, and Kwankwaso – were consistently advised to either consolidate their efforts or risk dilution of their individual influence. Rather than heeding this advice, the PDP saw a division, splitting into three separate factions: NNPP, PDP, and LP. Each faction had its own torchbearer – Kwankwaso, Atiku, and Obi respectively, challenging an incumbent president from the APC, a formidable party with over a decade of amalgamation from multiple political factions. Given these circumstances, one has to wonder: were they really expecting a victory at the polls?

Adding another layer of complexity to the situation, numerous PDP stalwarts seemed to break rank, choosing to side with President Tinubu instead of maintaining party loyalty.
